July 14 Saturday (scheduled shoot)

July 16 Monday (5:30 pm to 7:30 pm) Optional Critique Session

Makati City, behind RCBC Tower near Shell Gas Station

Maximum of 10 Participants

Topics:
1. Types of commonly used studio lights
2. Light modifiers
3. Trigerring lights
4. Measuring light
5. Light positions
6. Types of portrait lighting
7. Dealing with models

1st day of seminar will be on discussion of the topics, there will be no shooting to be done. Though there will be a hands-on practice in measuring lights using a flash meter.

2nd day, scheduled shoots for the group (9am, 1pm and 4pm), models will be provided. Participants should only come on their time slot, to avoid over crowding. During the shoot, each participant will be asked to conceptualize a lighting set-up to be done with their model, other participants on the same group will be assisting. After the participant finishes the shoot, other participant on the group will do the same, so the previous participant will now be acting as the assistant. (round robin system)

For the Critique session which will allow fellow students and me to critique ones work, as they say getting better needs one to realize its faults as to make sure to correct it the next possible time. Kindly bring 1 to 2 of your favorite photo from the photo session printed on 5R, ink jet prints on photo paper are acceptable. All photos will be posted together on the wall for viewing. I usually also discuss some questions regarding post processing during these critique sessions.

This guarantees a hands-on set-up, thus learning from actually doing it rather than just listening. This will also make sure that the participant will the only one shooting at the time of his/her set-up, so he/she gets all the needed angles to complete the shoot, no more wrestling for a spot just to get the photo.

Seminar Price is P. 2,500.00 - inclusive of handouts.

Philippine Photographers Dominate Round 3 of Crestock Photography Contest 2007

Friday, June 15th, 2007

A lot of Philippine photographers are making their way into the international photography scene by joining international photography contests.

One of the latest international photography contests that our fellow Philippine photographers joined is Crestock’s Photography Contest 2007.

Crestock Photography Contest 2007’s theme for round three is “Speed Demon“.

Speed Demon

In this final round we’re looking for photos that convey a real sense of speed – be it a person or object perfectly ‘frozen’ in mid-air, or long shutter speeds and motion blur used to exhilarating effect. And remember: it does not have to be traffic-trails or falling waterdroplets; originality counts too!

The winning photographer for this round will win a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II!

Submission of entries is already over but voting is still ongoing until next Monday, June 18, 2007.

Any one person may only cast a single, positive vote for each contest image. To be eligible to vote, you must register as a user at www.crestock.com, which is 100% free of charge. Attempts at obtaining added personal voting power by registering multiple accounts, or otherwise exploit the system, is strictly forbidden, and attempts at doing so may result in the voiding of votes cast and/or the removal of any entries submitted by the offender. The maximum number of eligible votes from any single organisation or IP location is 5. Our decision in this respect will be final, no correspondence will be entered into.

The winner will be announced on Wednesday 20th June and is determined 50% by public vote, 50% by Crestock’s judges’ votes.

Let us support our fellow Filipino Photographers by checking out and voting for their top entries :

Voting is only until June 18, 2007 so register and vote now!

Primer on Lighting at The Alcove by Jay Alonzo (June 2007)

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Alcove Perspective

Primer on Lighting

by Jay Alonzo
June 30, 2007 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

This pioneering course in the local photography scene is dedicated solely to the discussion of lighting concepts and techniques. It allows the participants to:

  • Learn the fundamental principles of lighting
  • Master the primary controllable characteristics of light
  • Become familiar with the different lighting tools used in the studio and on location
  • Master the systematic way of setting up lighting
  • Be able to “read” lighting conditions for best lighting design and exposure
  • Have a practical session applying the fundamental controllable characteristics of light in setting up artificial lighting

Requirement:

  • Basic working knowledge on photography, particularly exposure setting; or must have at least taken Photo 101 or Digital Photography 101
  • Optional - a camera with manual exposure control, exposure-flash meter

Venue:
Reading Room, Filipinas Heritage Library, Makati Avenue, Ayala Triangle, Makati City (across The Peninsula Manila)

Speaker:
Jay Alonzo personally designed the structure and contents of this workshop, after realizing the lack of emphasis on the in-depth discussion of lighting design and control in most local photo classes, and the lack of short courses that particularly deal with photographic lighting. As such, Jay, in partnership with The Alcove Perspective, first introduced the Primer on Lighting course in the summer of 2002.

Fee:
Workshop fee is Php2,200.00 inclusive of film, handouts, equipment use, meals, and certificate

Due to the limited slots available, please confirm attendance on or before June 23 by placing a P500.00 partial payment. A 10% early bird discount will be extended to those who will settle their payment in full on or before the deadline.

For more details, please call 8921801, email cruz.ct@ayalafoundation.org, or visit www.filipinaslibrary.org.ph
