Magalingdinkami - Disciples of Jo Avila Yahoogroup Launched!

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Jo Avila’s former students and VAs got together during Jo Avila’s Annual VA & Student party held last Saturday, July 21, 2007 at his studio and everyone had a great time!

The group had discussions in putting up an online venue where all of Jo Avila’s former students and VA’s can meet each other and share some ideas. With Jo Avila’s approval, Raymond Veran created a Yahoo! Group aptly name Magalingdinkami with a tagline Disciples of Jo Avila; Jo uses pinakamagalingako as his nick/username in forums and emails thus the name Magalingdinkami.

This groups exists as a venue for us friends, students and va’s alike, to share in our common passion for Photography. Here, we freely exchange ideas, techniques, experiences, “kwento”, good times, and of course, good photos.

Feel free to shout out to anyone in the group and to express anything on your mind (Photography related of course). We welcome everything from equipment reviews to info and tidbits on the goings-on of the photography world.

Let’s all get together and talk about photography and why we all shouldn’t take photos of a cow eating grass :D

Cheers!

Jo Avila

Please come join us if you are a former photography student or VA of  Jo Avila.

Ruel Tafalla Wins Ocean Category in Palm Beach Post Photo Contest

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Palm Beach Post Nature Photography Contest

The Palm Beach Post 3rd Annual Focus on Nature Photography Contest received over 3,000 entries from amateur photographers in the USA and Ruel Tafalla, a Filipino, emerged as the 1st place winner in the Oceans Category.

Ruel Tafalla's Winning Photo

Ruel Tafalla’s winning photo “Start of a new day“, shown above, was taken at the Boynton Inlet last May 27, 2007 at around 6:30 am.

During the shoot it was a bit cold and windy, and my camera was constantly sprayed with saltwater. Sunrise was at 6:20 but it was cloudy so I just shot the rocks and ocean with an ND filter mounted to slow down the shutter speed.

Ruel used his Canon EOS 5D with a Canon 16.35 f/2.8L lens with and ND filter. Settings used was f/22 at seconds exposure.

Ruel will receive a cash prize and a one-day group nature photography session with The Post’s deputy director of photography John J. Lopinot for bagging the 1st place in the Ocena category.

Why do I like Photography? Because I can’t Draw

Ruel has been living in Indonesia from 1997 to early 2007 and works as a semiconductor equipment engineer. He has been shooting since 1999 as a hobby. Ruel recently moved to South Florida, USA to pursue further studies.

I like to shoot landscapes, nature and infrared. I also like to shoot sports. But I changed to Canon EOS 5D from a Canon EOS 1D MKII N so no more sports shooting for me for the mean time.

Check out the special presentation on the winners, including audio commentary by the photographers and the contest’s head judge.

You can also see more of Ruel’s wonderful photography works at www.pbase.com/ruel and www.flickr.com/photos/ruel_photo or you may want to drop by his blog at www.rueltafalla.blogspot.com.

Congrats Ruel!

Everyday Islam Photo Contest

Everyday Islam Photo Contest

An exhibit of images reflecting multicultural integration in Britain early this year provided an excellent opportunity to stir some reflection and dialogue between Muslims and Christians on their shared beliefs, and values, according to a senior British diplomat in the Philippines.

“This sort of competition takes the issue of “Everyday Islam” beyond the purely academic forum, and provides opportunities for reflection and interpretation of cross-cultural dilemmas and some of the challenges facing us today”, said British Charge d’Affaires Colin Crorkin.

As a result, a photography competition entitled “Everyday Islam” has been launched to depict Muslim life in the Philippines, following the example set by UK-based and internationally renowned photographer and Muslim convert Peter Sanders.

The competition aims to popularise shared aspirations and concerns of Muslims and non- Muslims, in order to promote integration and counter messages that tend to emphasise discord and differences.

Sponsored by the British Embassy in partnership with Newsbreak, the competition has two categories: professional, for those who earn a living from photography or are hobbyists who have participated in photo contests; and amateur, for those who do not earn a living from photography and who may submit photos taken with their mobile phone cameras.

Each entry must consist of one (1) full color, 8″ x 10″ photograph, accompanied by a caption. The photographer should not put his name or any distinguishing marks on the photograph.

A separate paper containing the caption and the name and contact details of the photographer should be submitted with the photograph. Contestants are requested to submit as well the original or raw files of their entries.

A contestant may submit as many entries as he or she desires. Relatives of British Embassy and Newsbreak employees up to the fourth degree of consanguinity are not allowed to participate in the competition.

Entries should be received by Newsbreak before or on August 31, Friday. They may be hand-carried or mailed to Room 1402-A West Tower, Philippine Stock Exchange Centre, Exchange Road, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

A board of judges will pick two winners in each category, or a total of four winners. In the professional category, P25,000 awaits the first prize winner, and P10,000 the second prize winner. In the amateur category, the first and second prize winners will receive P15,000 and P5,000, respectively.

Winners will be announced in the last week of September. Winning entries will be featured on the British Embassy and Newsbreak websites.

Copyright to the photographs will remain with the photographers, but the entries shall be made part of the British Embassy’s photobank, which it can use at no extra cost for future projects related to its Engaging with the Islamic World program.
