Canon Ambassador Program (1st Half of 2008)

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Canon

Canon Philippines launched the Canon Ambassador Program last June 2007. The Canon Ambassador Program is a rebate program geared towards photography organizations. The program aims to provide another way for organization members to help raise funds for their respective organizations by getting rebates whenever they purchase Canon products.

The Canon Ambassador Program is also the first of its kind as it only available in the Philippines and not offered in any other country. The program is a purely local effort launched by Canon Philippines and is not affiliated with any international program.

“The program reinforces Canon’s support of the strong photography community and local industry, as well as a way to encourage the photographers to continue supporting locally distributed products which are covered by Canon’s local warranty” says Ms. Tiffany Shau of Consumer Imaging & Information Division, Canon Marketing (Philippines).

Each Canon Ambassador Program covers a six (6) month period for the year. For the 2nd half of 2007, the winning organization was the Pinoy Phot0graphy Org, popularly known as PiPho. They were able to raise over P120,000 for their organization.

Colonial Imagings of Manila - Architectural Talk by Edson Cabalfin

Architectural Talk by Edson Cabalfin

Colonial Imaginings of Manila:
Architectural Photographs of Dean C. Worcester, 1898-1914

Talk by Edson Cabalfin

Saturday, February 23, 2008 3-5 PM

Silverlens Gallery

Architectural photography is never neutral and innocent but, rather, is embedded within discourses of power, politics and ideology. The presentation will show how photographs of Manila and its environs by Dean C. Worcester, a member of the First Philippine Commission formed by U.S. President William McKinley in 1899, articulated the pervading American colonial narrative during the early part of the twentieth century.

The presentation focuses on the published photographs of Philippine architectures in Worcester’s books “The Philippine Islands and their People” (published in 1898) and “The Philippines Past and Present” (published in 1914 and subsequently in 1930), which became popular readings in the United States at the onset of the twentieth century.

Using “before” and “after” photographs as a technique in depicting the architectures, Worcester placed in opposition the state of the Philippines before and after American colonial intervention. Highlighting architectural categories, such as materiality, permanence, order, cleanliness and style, the presentation thus attempts to analyze the photographs as instruments of propagating the colonial program of the American government in the Philippines.

Edson Cabalfin is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the History of Architecture and Urbanism Program in the Department of Architecture at Cornell University under a Sage Graduate Fellowship. He was formerly a Fulbright Fellow from 2001-2003 under which he received his Master of Science degree in Architecture (Major in History, Theory and Criticism) from the University of Cincinnati in 2003. Before coming to the U.S., he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture (cum laude) in 1996 and Masters of Architecture degree (Major in Architectural Design) in 2001 from the University of the Philippines. His current dissertation research revolves around the relationship of the discourse of nationalism and the architecture culture in postcolonial Philippines (1946-1998). He has taught at the University of the Philippines, Far Eastern University and De La Salle – College of St. Benilde in Manila. A licensed architect in the Philippines, he actively experiments in architecture, interior, graphic, costume/fashion, and set/scenography design having done projects in New York, Philadelphia, Istanbul and Manila.

Through Australian Eyes - First Philippine Exhibition by Henry Bateman

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Through Australian Eyes by Henry Baetman

Calubcub Town Square at Night (2007) by Henry Bateman

In March, Australian artist/photographer Henry Bateman will hold his first Philippine exhibition at Makati City’s One Workshop Gallery, entitled “Through Australian Eyes”.

An expatriate Australian, Bateman has been living in the Philippines for 3 years and comes with an extensive track record of overseas exhibitions in both Australia and the US. The most recent being September last year at the Australian National University’s Photospace Gallery in Australia’s national capital, Canberra.

“Through Australian Eyes” documents Bateman’s impressions of living in the Philippines. His abstract and semi abstract photographs concentrate on three aspects of Filipino life, “da province, religion and shopping.

“These aspects of Filipino life stand in stark contrast to an Australian lifestyle,” Bateman said. “With my photographs I have tried to capture not only the physical differences but also the cultural confrontation experienced when Australian sensibilities meet the Filipino lifestyle,” he added.

Through Australian Eyes” is an exhibition of colour photographs which the artist claims to be integral to his work. “For me the Philippines isn’t a black and white country,” Bateman said. “There aren’t enough shades of grey to depict all the complexities, you’ve just got to use colour,” he added.

Using line and form as well as colour Bateman manipulates his digitally captured photographs on his computer to delve below the composition of the recorded moment. From each of his photographs he builds a new image that explores the underlying motivation that caused the shutter to be pressed when it was. “It is a journey in which the image dictates what directions to take,” Bateman said. “My major contribution is knowing when a destination has been reached,” he added.

Australian art critic, Judith McGrath, has said about his work “Bateman has a keen eye for collecting aspects of everyday life, and a keen sense of design for digitally manipulating his pictures. He creates visual images that engage the viewer, and that’s what Art is all about.”

Through Australian Eyes” opens on the 4th of March at Ross Capili’s One Workshop Gallery, La Fuerza Plaza II, 2241 Don Chino Roces Avenue, Makati City and runs through to the 4th of April.
