Will Work 4 Food by Steve Tirona at Silverlens Gallery

Steve Tirona's Will Work 4 Food

WILL WORK 4 FOOD

by

Steve Tirona

Curated by Adeline Ooi

6pm on April 24, 2008 - May 24, 2008

Will Work 4 Food began in 2005 with a simple aim to take “snapshots” of the nascent but exciting days of Manila’s alternative contemporary art scene. Three years on, the careers of a number of the individuals pictured here have matured. Many are now making names for themselves as some of the Philippines’ most promising and exciting young contemporary artists. This ‘family tree’ reads like the tangled streets we traverse on daily. Whether working together as members of a collective, setting up exhibition venues of their own, or quietly working on their obsessions, their energy is inspiring, their enthusiasm and determination to continually provoke and play, to experiment and reinvent.

Born in Manila in 1976, Steve Tirona was raised in Southern California and calls Los Angeles his hometown. After graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Photography from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 1996, Tirona went on to taking pictures professionally in the U.S. and Southeast Asia. His past work includes Rage Against the Machine’s Battle of Los Angeles album as well as the photographs for the movie Adaptation . His unorthodox vision and style of photography have garnered the respect and admiration of his peers and the creative industry as a whole. Steve is now based in Manila.

This project has been supported by The Nippon Foundation Asian Public Intellectuals Fellowship grant.

Accompanying Will Work 4 Food are Saturday Gallery Activities , all from 3-5pm:

Canon Releases EOS 40D Firmware Update v1.0.8

Friday, April 11th, 2008

This firmware update (Version 1.0.8) incorporates the following improvements and fixes.

  1. Fixes a phenomenon in which Image Stabilization operation emits a sound when certain buttons are pressed, with the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lens attached to the camera.
  2. Fixes a phenomenon in which the Image Stabilization operation emits a sound from the lens when IS lenses are attached to the camera.
  3. Fixes a phenomenon in which a part of the image looks unnatural when reviewed on the LCD. Depending on the color of the background, the edges of some objects in the image may appear to have a jagged edge and look unnatural. (Even if the image played back on the camera’s LCD is affected by this phenomenon, the actual image data is not affected.)
  4. Corrects errors in the Spanish and Norwegian menu screens.

The Version 1.0.8 firmware being released this time is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.0.5. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.0.8, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

A power failure during the firmware writing operation may disable the camera.

  • Use a fully charged Battery Pack or dedicated AC Adapter Kit (Optional) ACK-E2 for the firmware update.
  • Do not shut off the power during the firmware writing operation.
  • Do not open the CF card slot cover during the firmware writing operation.

Do not press any camera buttons during the firmware writing operation.

Downloading the Canon EOS 40D firmware update v1.0.8 already includes all updates and fixes made in previous versions.

Kingston’s Icons of Photography

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Kingston’s Icons of Photography website provides tips, critiques and suggestions from renowned photographers and Kingston Icons Harry Benson, Colin Finaly, Gerd Ludwig and Peter Read Miller. The site’s main purpose is to provide a platform for sharing thoughts and ideas so that consumers and pros alike can utilize this resource to forward their own careers and creative interests.

The site allows you to send in your questions wherein the Icons will answer, share tips, insights and experiences from their lifelong love of photography.

This month, the Icons offered sage advice on topics including shooting in extreme conditions, how a publication captures events from multiple angles and finding work as a photographer.

They say that for you to be able to improve your craft, you should have your work critiqued. This way you can get feedback whether or not you have a great shot or there are still some room for improvement or perhaps you could try a different approach so you could capture a better photo. So if you are brave enough… upload your image and select an Icon who you’d like to critique the photo you’ve submitted.

The Kingston Icons of Photography website is updated every month so check back every now and then for updates.
