Canon Releases EOS 40D Firmware Update v1.0.8

Friday, April 11th, 2008

This firmware update (Version 1.0.8) incorporates the following improvements and fixes.

  1. Fixes a phenomenon in which Image Stabilization operation emits a sound when certain buttons are pressed, with the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lens attached to the camera.
  2. Fixes a phenomenon in which the Image Stabilization operation emits a sound from the lens when IS lenses are attached to the camera.
  3. Fixes a phenomenon in which a part of the image looks unnatural when reviewed on the LCD. Depending on the color of the background, the edges of some objects in the image may appear to have a jagged edge and look unnatural. (Even if the image played back on the camera’s LCD is affected by this phenomenon, the actual image data is not affected.)
  4. Corrects errors in the Spanish and Norwegian menu screens.

The Version 1.0.8 firmware being released this time is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.0.5. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.0.8, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

A power failure during the firmware writing operation may disable the camera.

  • Use a fully charged Battery Pack or dedicated AC Adapter Kit (Optional) ACK-E2 for the firmware update.
  • Do not shut off the power during the firmware writing operation.
  • Do not open the CF card slot cover during the firmware writing operation.

Do not press any camera buttons during the firmware writing operation.

Downloading the Canon EOS 40D firmware update v1.0.8 already includes all updates and fixes made in previous versions.

Is It Photography

An Artists Talk by Henry Bateman

Saturday 29 March 2008 @ 4pm

One Workshop Gallery

The advent of digital photography and its association with the computer heralds a new age for photography. As “drawing with light” becomes “painting with light” artist/photographer Henry Bateman examines the phenomenon and speculates on whether, with the adoption of these changes, can it still be considered photography? As the photograph becomes the object rather than a record of the object, will the loss of its niche status be detrimental and does it matter?

Bateman has a critically-acclaimed career that is as colourful as the captivating story of his own personal life and creative processes. He’s been drawing, painting, designing, writing, publishing, directing and producing—as well as taking and re-creating digital photography for over three decades.

Originally trained as an electronics technician, Bateman opted to follow his artist’s heart on an action-packed, seat-of-the-pants journey through lighting and stage design for theatres, stage plays and ballets; studios, art schools and galleries; and publishing companies, television stations and his very own ad agency.

One of Bateman’s recent stops on this journey was a carved mural project for no less than the Australian government’s social security agency, which turned out to be a way-post for him into the wonderful world of digital photography.
