Lighting (Studio and Strobist) Seminar w/ Basic Photography BATCH # 36

by Ken Go

July 18 Saturday (1:00pm to 6:00pm), July 19 Sunday (scheduled shoot), July 20 Monday (6:00 pm to 9:00 pm) Portable wireless lighting and Critique session

The seminar covers everything from basic to advance, the only lighting class you will ever need to take.

Feedbacks from past participants:

“Hi Ken, thank you for sharing with us your knowledge and expertise in the field of lighting. I truly learned so much from you and enjoyed the seminar a lot. Overall, i would rate the 3 day seminar 5 stars :-) . Keeping the atmosphere light and fun helped us absorb the topics easier. Valuable knowledge was learned without information overload. The actual shoot was the highlight of it all. Being able to apply the topics hands on was the best training anyone could have. I would highly recommend your classes to my friends who are getting into photography like myself.”

“Once again, many thanks for the workshop. Honestly, I really did enjoy it. You explained the concepts clearly and you were also willing to answer all of our questions. Furthermore, I also liked the fact that you also talked about your experience as a professional photographer and the great sense of humor you have.”

“Thanks very much for the lighting class.  Great class!  In comparison to another lighting class that I took previously you are much more thorough.  I have a much better understanding to setting up the lights, using the light meter, and ratios. I can honestly say I have much more confidence now than I did before.”

Where: Unit 602 Cityland 10 Tower 2, H.V. Dela Costa St. Salcedo
Village, Makati City, behind RCBC Tower. http://www.photosbykengo.com/misc/map.jpg

Maximum of 10 Participants

Topics:

  1. Basic Photography
  2. Types of commonly used studio lights
  3. Light modifiers
  4. Trigerring lights
  5. Measuring light
  6. Light positions
  7. Types of portrait lighting
  8. Dealing with models
  9. Portable wireless lighting (Strobist)

1st day of seminar will start of with a refresher on Basic Photography, discussing exposure and composition, before discussion on studio lighting. There will be no shooting to be done. Though there will be a hands-on practice in measuring lights using a flash meter. You will not be required to bring anything during the 1st day.

2nd day, scheduled shoots for the group (9am, 1pm and 4pm), models and make-up artist will be provided. Participants should only come on their time slot, to avoid over crowding. During the shoot, each participant will be asked to conceptualize a lighting set-up to be done with their model, other participants on the same group will be assisting. After the participant finishes the shoot, other participant on the group will do the same, so the previous participant will now be acting as the assistant. (round robin system) this guarantees a hands-on set-up, thus learning from actually doing it rather than just listening. This will also make sure that the participant will the only one shooting at the time of his/her set-up, so he/she gets all the needed angles to complete the shoot, no more wrestling for a spot just to get the photo.

3rd day, Portable wireless lighting discussion, includes gear needed and how to apply basic lighting techniques to this type of set-up. For the Critique session we will allow fellow students and me to critique ones work, as they say getting better needs one to realize its faults as to make sure to correct it the next possible time.

Kindly bring 1 to 2 of your favorite photo from the photo session printed on 5R, ink jet prints on photo paper are acceptable. All photos will be posted together on the wall for viewing. I usually also discuss some questions regarding post processing during these critique sessions.

Seminar Price is PhP 3,000.00 – inclusive of handouts.

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Photography buffs have many reasons to be keyed up for Photo World Manila ’09 from January 29 to February 4. One good reason is to experience Canon’s latest imaging technology products at the Glorietta Activity Center.

Canon launched over 30 products via the grand Image Nation Celebrations campaign last year. The event succeeded in expanding the extensive range of cameras & printers available in the market. The new products boast of Canon’s patented cutting edge technologies such as the Digic 4 Image Processor for cameras and Chromalife 100+ for the Canon PIXMA photo printers.

With its unstoppable innovations and developments, GFK Philippines has recently announced that Canon is the No. 1 brand for Digital SLR and Digital Cameras for 2008 in the Philippines. Canon  holds the No. 1 position with a 37% and 60% market share (in value) for the Digital Camera and Digital SLR categories respectively.

The Canon booth at the Photo World Manila 2009 carries exciting offers namely:

  1. The Canon 5D Mark II: Launched late last year with great fanfare, Canon once again introduces significant performance gains with this DSLR model: a new 21.1 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, DIGIC 4 image processor, and a host of advanced features to make the EOS 5D Mark II the platform of choice for professional photographers and advanced photography enthusiasts who demand the best. But don’t just take others’ word for it, come on over and try it out for yourself.
  2. The Canon Photo Marathon Winner’s Exhibit: See the winning photos up close and personal for the first time in a public exhibit. All photos were printed out using the best Canon PIXMA Printers, the PIXMA Pro 9000 & Pro 9500

Built for power and panoramic framing with the DIGIC 4 engine, 5x optical zoom with OIS, wide-angle lens (28mm) and an amazing 14.7 megapixels. Budding professionals will lap up its RAW format capability, while appreciating the generous 3-inch PureColour II LCD screen.
  4. Exclusive Deals & Discounts: Canon offers special discounts on key EOS DSLR models such as the 20D, 1D Mark III & 1DS Mark III at the Photo World event. This is in line with Canon’s campaign to make getting into professional photography easier on the pocket. Every purchase of the affordable EOS 1000D Kit (Php32,995) and  EOS 450D body or kit comes with free photography workshops, 2GB SD Cards and an exclusive Crumpler camera strap. Learn Photography from NYIP

Friday, December 12th, 2008

The New York Institute of Photography (NYIP) is the world’s oldest and largest photography school. Established in 1910, NYIP has grown to become the premier provider of distance photography training, educating more than 20,000 students in the US and more than 50 countries abroad at any given time.

NYIP’s courses in Professional Photography, Digital Photography: Photoshop for Photographers and NYI Short Course: Fundamentals of Digital Photography combine the convenience of at-home study with state-of-the-art photography training from professional photographers.

NYIP is also know for running the prestigious annual NYIP International Photo Contests which gives out some pretty wonderful prices and of course bragging rights if you win.

You can request for a free catalog to get more info on what their courses offers. I do have to admit that after reading their course catalog… their cours costs are on the high side compared to what our local photography seminars charge.  But NYIP might just work for you if you don’t mind shelling out a little bit more and seem to have a difficult time attending photography seminars/workshops based on their specified schedule.

One thing good with NYIP’s courses is that they are self-paced and you can always go back to the topics which you might want to review since almost all the multimedia-based lessons are stored in CDs which will be shipped to you.

But if you don’t like to pay a hefty sum just to start learning about photography… NYIP can still help you out. They have a PhotoWorld ezine which contains a plethora of photography tips, articles and guides from black and white photography to camera cleaning and even underwater photography. Best of all you access the ezine for free!

Do check out NYIP at http://www.nyip.com.
