Filipinas: Photographs by Isa Lorenzo Book Launch at Silverlens Gallery

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

Silverlens Gallery invites everyone to the book launch of Filipinas: Photographs by Isa Lorenzo today, Saturday, July 7, 2007 from 3 PM. to 5 PM. The book was published in part with a grant from the Philippine National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

Filipinas is a series of photographs of 30 women who represent the arts, education, social work, civil society and politics. No elaborate costumes or backdrops were used, only film and a simple background in the style of studio photography from the 1940s and 1950s. Curated by Deanna Ongpin-Recto, the Filipinas were selected for their pioneering spirit, their achievements, and their landmark influences. Aside from the photographs, the book, designed by Isabel “Pepper” Roxas, includes short biographies of the Filipinas written by Ongpin-Recto with materials submitted by the women themselves.

The Filipinas are Estefania Aldaba-Lim, Ligaya Fernando Amilbangsa, Teresita Ang-See, Eugenia D. Apostol, Corazon C. Aquino, Daisy Hontiveros Avellana, Helena Z. The photo book is aptly titled Voyage 15840 since it depicts their journey and 15840 is a migrant’s monthly income in Taiwan.

The 19 Filipino migrants whose photos are featured in the photo book are Alicia Dimzon, Blesilda Landingin, Cyd Charisse Sannoy, Edcel Benosa, Elizabeth dela Cruz, Ellen Panaligan, Emy Derder, Evangeline Agustin, Glorette Platon, Gracelyn Mosquera, Jun Sanchez, Lucile Alfaro, Maria Christina Antipala, Maria Belen Batabat, Maria Josefina Vafloe, Maricel Santiago, Mechille Dacuno, Nida Quintay and Ronel Gonzales.
