Pop! Nostalgia: One-Man Exhibit by Jay Tablante
Pop! Nostalgia
One-man Exhibit by Jason Tablante
Making Comics and Cartoons Fashionable
Opening Night: June 3, 2008 @ 6PM
Crucible Gallery, 4th Floor, SM Megamall A

Fashion and glamour isn’t limited to models decked out in haute couture. Which is why fashion photographer Jason Tablante let his inner geek take over his camera lens for Pop! Nostalgia, a photo exhibit that takes a quirky look at what we wouldn’t normally consider as “fashionable”: comics, cartoons, movies, and video games.

“The exhibit is a personal revisit of the characters and themes that helped mold my imagination throughout the years, and in a way, celebrate them,” said the 27-year old photographer.

The 12 images contain celebrities whom Tablante picked to show their versatility in portraying different personalities. Some of the stars who grace the exhibit are Rhian Ramos as a comic book superhero, Aljun Albrenica and Kris Bernal as action figures, Jackie Rice as a ragdoll, Mark Herras as a mobster, Isabel Oli as an alien, and Iza Calzado as a Stepford Wife.

See Tablante’s take on these pieces of pop culture featuring some of today’s hottest stars from GMA Artist Center, from June 3 to June 15, at the Crucible Gallery, Mega Mall.

Through Australian Eyes - First Philippine Exhibition by Henry Bateman

Through Australian Eyes by Henry Baetman

Calubcub Town Square at Night (2007) by Henry Bateman

In March, Australian artist/photographer Henry Bateman will hold his first Philippine exhibition at Makati City’s One Workshop Gallery, entitled “Through Australian Eyes”.

An expatriate Australian, Bateman has been living in the Philippines for 3 years and comes with an extensive track record of overseas exhibitions in both Australia and the US. The most recent being September last year at the Australian National University’s Photospace Gallery in Australia’s national capital, Canberra.

“Through Australian Eyes” documents Bateman’s impressions of living in the Philippines. His abstract and semi abstract photographs concentrate on three aspects of Filipino life, “da province, religion and shopping.

“These aspects of Filipino life stand in stark contrast to an Australian lifestyle,” Bateman said. “With my photographs I have tried to capture not only the physical differences but also the cultural confrontation experienced when Australian sensibilities meet the Filipino lifestyle,” he added.

Through Australian Eyes” is an exhibition of colour photographs which the artist claims to be integral to his work. “For me the Philippines isn’t a black and white country,” Bateman said. “There aren’t enough shades of grey to depict all the complexities, you’ve just got to use colour,” he added.

Using line and form as well as colour Bateman manipulates his digitally captured photographs on his computer to delve below the composition of the recorded moment. From each of his photographs he builds a new image that explores the underlying motivation that caused the shutter to be pressed when it was. “It is a journey in which the image dictates what directions to take,” Bateman said. “My major contribution is knowing when a destination has been reached,” he added.

Australian art critic, Judith McGrath, has said about his work “Bateman has a keen eye for collecting aspects of everyday life, and a keen sense of design for digitally manipulating his pictures. He creates visual images that engage the viewer, and that’s what Art is all about.”

Through Australian Eyes” opens on the 4th of March at Ross Capili’s One Workshop Gallery, La Fuerza Plaza II, 2241 Don Chino Roces Avenue, Makati City and runs through to the 4th of April.

Akoy Batang Malate Photo Exhibit

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

 The Parish Council of Malate

in cooperation with

RFilipinas

invites you to

Ako’y Batang Malate Photo Exhibit

November 9-18, 2007

at the Malate Catholic Church

Ako'y Batang Malate Photo Exhibit

The making of this project started when musician/voice talent Wam Molina approached the newly formed group of photo/camera enthusiasts who call themselves RFilipinas and brought up the idea of taking photographs of the Malate street children for a possible photo exhibit to be held at the Malate Catholic Parish to coincide with its fiesta in November 2007.

He had been toying with this idea since January. Being a musician, he had been performing at the Hobbit House and frequenting Penguin for years.  He became familiar with the children of Malate. As a photo enthusiast, he had planned to do a series of photographs of the children’s feet. But he decided that he could help the children more if whatever he would do could generate money to contribute to the parish’s many children-focused projects.

The group he approached enthusiastically faced up to the challenge and within a span of more than four months visited Malate alone or in groups to take pictures of the children with their rangefinder cameras loaded with film.

Rfilipinas is composed of Jay Javier, a professional photographer and teacher; Nelson Chan, an entrepreneur; Eddie Concepcion, a doctor who practices traditional Chinese acupuncture; Gari Buenavista, an artist; Rain Contreras, an IT professional; Uro Q. Dela Cruz, a TV/Film writer and director; Gabriel David, a journalist; Nor Domingo, a theatre actor.   Luis Liwanag, an international photojournalist; his young son Akira Liwanag; Annie Neis, an IT professional based in Colorado who could not join the shoot sent black and white films for the project; Dr.Gerry Sabado, a surgeon; Eric Sales, a photographer; Marc Talampas, an engineer and educator and Andrea Zulueta, a hairdresser. A motley crowd from different walks of life, bound together by their respect for rangefinder cameras and film.

Wam later says, “I am very much overwhelmed with the support I got from my fellow RFilipinas members for this project. This project has been an eye-opener for everyone, realizing the living conditions of not only the children of Malate but our less fortunate Filipino brothers and sisters in general. It has been a very humbling experience”

All proceeds derived from the exhibit will be for the benefit of the Remedios Training Center and the street children of Malate.

Thanks to Wam Molina for the heads up on this photo exhibit.
