Living by Water Photo Exhibit by Ferdinand Decena

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Living By Water is Ferdinand Decena’s First One-man show exhibit.

The Exhibit will be held on May 12-27, 2008 at Filipinas Heritage Library in Ayala Triangle, Makati City.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
From time immemorial, civilizations have thrived and lived near bodies of water. The reason is crystal-clear: water is vital to man’s existence. It is the reason why this exhibition pays homage to water and its significance to how and why people live by the water. Featuring photos that tell stories about the coastal Filipinos’ living conditions, reveal their culture, and relate their stories of survival.

The exhibit will carry a raft of striking images from across our archipelago. The Badjao Stilt Villages of Basilan. The Muslim Stilt Village of Rio Hondo in Zamboanga. The fishermen of Siquijor. The T’bolis of Lake Sebu. The rugged shores of Itbayat in Batanes. And the tranquil coasts of Iloilo.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Ferdinand is a travel photographer and award-winning blogger. A graduate of Fine Arts, Major in Advertising at the Far Eastern University, he got started on film photography during his college years. He worked as a graphic artist and web designer for three years, pursuing photography as a hobby.

Landing his first publication job as an Art Director enabled him to embark on a new career ̶ as a professional travel photographer. Getting his fair share of freelance jobs and assignments, his works eventually got published in a number of travel magazines both here and overseas.

His website Ironwulf.net: En Route at www.ironwulf.net, is the chronicle of his many travels and insightful photography. It has received recognition from the both local and international media.

With eager eyes, a curious mind and wandering feet, this young travel photographer and blogger plans to do an exhibit on Asian Heritage sites in the near future.

Through Australian Eyes - First Philippine Exhibition by Henry Bateman

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Through Australian Eyes by Henry Baetman

Calubcub Town Square at Night (2007) by Henry Bateman

In March, Australian artist/photographer Henry Bateman will hold his first Philippine exhibition at Makati City’s One Workshop Gallery, entitled “Through Australian Eyes”.

An expatriate Australian, Bateman has been living in the Philippines for 3 years and comes with an extensive track record of overseas exhibitions in both Australia and the US. The most recent being September last year at the Australian National University’s Photospace Gallery in Australia’s national capital, Canberra.

“Through Australian Eyes” documents Bateman’s impressions of living in the Philippines. His abstract and semi abstract photographs concentrate on three aspects of Filipino life, “da province, religion and shopping.

“These aspects of Filipino life stand in stark contrast to an Australian lifestyle,” Bateman said. “With my photographs I have tried to capture not only the physical differences but also the cultural confrontation experienced when Australian sensibilities meet the Filipino lifestyle,” he added.

Through Australian Eyes” is an exhibition of colour photographs which the artist claims to be integral to his work. “For me the Philippines isn’t a black and white country,” Bateman said. “There aren’t enough shades of grey to depict all the complexities, you’ve just got to use colour,” he added.

Using line and form as well as colour Bateman manipulates his digitally captured photographs on his computer to delve below the composition of the recorded moment. From each of his photographs he builds a new image that explores the underlying motivation that caused the shutter to be pressed when it was. “It is a journey in which the image dictates what directions to take,” Bateman said. “My major contribution is knowing when a destination has been reached,” he added.

Australian art critic, Judith McGrath, has said about his work “Bateman has a keen eye for collecting aspects of everyday life, and a keen sense of design for digitally manipulating his pictures. He creates visual images that engage the viewer, and that’s what Art is all about.”

Through Australian Eyes” opens on the 4th of March at Ross Capili’s One Workshop Gallery, La Fuerza Plaza II, 2241 Don Chino Roces Avenue, Makati City and runs through to the 4th of April.

Manila by Rachel Rillo at The Silverlens Gallery

Manila by Rachel Rillo at Silverlens Gallery

Rachel Rillo will be open her photography exhibit, metaphorically called “MANILA”, on February 13th, 6pm, at the silverlens gallery. It is her second exhibit after being the inaugural show at the warehouse space the photography gallery moved into in September 2006.

Her photographs are intimate in size, drawing the viewer in what would otherwise be a common sight. Rillo, returning last year from the United States, continued shooting the wires project she started abroad some three years ago. But in Manila, “the more I looked the harder it was for me to see anything else. The wires were the perfect metaphor for the chaos shrouding the city.”

The images are emotional; alternately funny and somber, gentle and violent, delicate and tensile. The deliberate exclusion of buildings and clouds must have made for a funny sight while Rillo was shooting. Her viewfinder framing, physically dodging all other evidence of viral urban growth shows the exquisite that is above us if only we care to see.

Accompanying “MANILA” are Saturday Gallery Activities, all from 3 – 5 pm:

Feb. 16 – Man Ray Film Showing and Rachel Rillo Gallery Talk

Feb. 23 – Edson Cabalfin: Colonial Imaginings of Manila
Architectural Photographs of Dean C. Worcester, 1898-1914

March 1 – John Silva: On Manila

Silverlens Gallery is at 2320 Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday 10 am – 7 pm, Saturday 1 – 6 pm. Call 816-0044, email manage@silverlensphoto.com or visit www.silverlensphoto.com for more info.

 2 New Canon L-Series Telephotos

The EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM and EF200mm f/2L IS USM are professional L-Series lenses that incorporate the latest generation of Canon’s high-performance Optical Image Stabilizer system (OIS), giving them a stabilization effect equivalent to a shutter speed four settings faster. In addition, they feature optical systems utilizing fluorite and UD lens elements to provide excellent chromatic aberration correction for high-resolution, high-contrast shooting performance. Both lenses use only lead-free glass, and also incorporate lightweight yet durable magnesium alloy lens barrels with enhanced resistance to moisture and dust.

Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS

The Canon EF200mm f/2L IS USM is an exceptionally sharp lens that is significantly lighter (2520g/5.5 lbs. vs. 3000g/6.6 lbs.) than its predecessor, the renowned EF200mm f/1.8L USM lens, while adding OIS and a weather-resistant design. Ideal for all kinds of low-light photography including portraiture as well as indoor sports, the EF200mm f/2L IS USM has a close-focus setting of 1.9 m/6.2 feet and a circular aperture system that enhances its background blur rendition at wide apertures.

Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS

The Canon EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM is not only the longest focal length lens available with OIS, it is also virtually the same physical size as the EF600mm f/4L IS USM (461mm vs. 456mm), while weighing nearly 2 lbs. less (4500g/9.9 lbs. vs. 5360g/11.8 lbs.). These outstanding features were made possible by the use of a lightweight magnesium alloy lens barrel construction and a state-of-the-art super-telephoto optical system featuring 2 fluorite elements as well as Super UD and UD glass elements. The EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM is well-suited for a wide variety of long-range photo applications such as wildlife and nature photography as well as sports and documentary photojournalism.

The new Canon EF200mm f/2L IS USM is scheduled to be available in April at an estimated retail price of $5,999.00 and the new Canon EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM is scheduled to be available in May for an estimated retail price of $11,999.00.
