But for Bernie, photography has been his passion since the 80’s where he still used black and white films.
Bernie’s works have been featured in both local and international Magazines.
Demystifying Mindanao Culture
Talk by Lory Tan
October 18, 2008 Saturday 3-5pm

On October 18, Saturday, from 3-5pm, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Philippines Trustee and Vice-Chairman Lory Tan will be give a talk on Mindanao, its intricacies and controversies, through its culinary arts. In the late nineties, Bookmark published a book on Mindanao. To obtain the visuals and stories that eventually filled that book, the development team traveled the length and breadth of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago. At the time, Lory Tan was writing occasional food pieces for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. He then capitalized on the opportunity and maintained a diary of the meals they enjoyed along the way. This talk is culled from those field notes, and constitutes a faithful re-living of that experience.

Jose Ma. Lorenzo “Lory” Tan is the Vice-Chairman of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Philippines and the President of the Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation, Inc. A staunch environmentalist, publisher, writer, and photographer, Tan has won numerous publishing awards. His book, “The Last Great Forest: Luzon’s Northern Sierra Madre Nature Park”, won the National Book Award for Environment in 2001. Another one of his books, “A Field Guide to Whales and Dolphins in the Philippines,” won the Gintong Aklat for Science in 1998. He was named Travel Writer of the Year in 1995 for his article “A Season of Whales,” published in Mabuhay Magazine.

The talk is a part of the current Silverlens Gallery show, Isa Lorenzo, 003: The Moro Negatives.

Visit Silverlens Gallery at 2/F YMC Bldg. 2, 2320 Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City, 816-0044, 0905-2650873, manage@silverlensphoto.com. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday 10am–7 pm, Saturday 1–6pm.

A Peruvian and a Chinese photographer were announced as winners of a world photography contest, launched by the United Nations to highlight the potato’s key role in agriculture, the economy and world food security.

Part of the International Year of the Potato celebrations in 2008, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) awarded first prizes in the contest – called “Focus on a global food” – to professional photographer Eitan Abramovich, and amateur photographer Xi Huang.

Photographer Marlene Singh from the Philippines won 3rd prize in the Amatuer category with her winning photo entitled “Bamboo Boat“.

The 1000 contest entries from over 90 countries were reviewed and evaluated by a selection committee of eight panellists including five of the world’s leading professionals, who granted second and third prizes in both the professional and amateur categories to photographers from Spain, Belarus, the Netherlands and the Philippines.

The Winners are:

Professional category

1st prize: Eitan Abramovich, Peru — “Harvest of native potatoes”

2nd prize: Pablo Balbontin, Spain — “The custodians of biodiversity”

3rd prize: Viktor Drachev, Belarus — “Belarus soldiers eat potatoes”

Amateur category

1st prize: Xi Huang, China — Untitled

2nd prize: Dick Gerstmeijer, Netherlands — “Digging up potatoes”

3rd prize: Marlene Singh, Philippines — “Bamboo boat”

In support of the spirit of the International Year, photographers were invited to submit images that illustrated potato cultivation, processing, trade, marketing, consumption and utilization.

Sponsored by Nikon Europe and Irge Colore Srl, the event gave photographers an opportunity to showcase previous work or to capture new images depicting the vital crop, single digital images and “photo stories” of four to eight related images in either black or colour.

Coinciding with World Food Day – observed annually on 16 October to mark the founding of FAO – the “focus on global food” contest works to support the day’s ethos to highlight the first Millennium Development Goal (MDG) to halve hunger and poverty by the year 2015.

Mapping Invisible Cities Photo Exhibition - Manila

Opening reception: October 17, 2008

Shangri-la Plaza Mall, EDSA cor. Shaw Blvd.
Mandaluyong City, Philippines

When photographer Peter Bialobrzeski travelled through Southeast Asia in 2007/8, he combined his own photographic investigations with workshops for young talents in six foremost cities of the region: Jakarta, Hanoi, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Singapore. What came out of the workshops was a multifaceted kaleidoscope of these six metropoles, culminating in the exhibition “Mapping Invisible Cities.”

“Mapping Invisible Cities” features the works of 27 photographers, including 8 from the Philippines (Cathy Quiogue, Cris Sevilla, Dennis Rito, Estan Cabigas, Gigie cruz, Kidlat De Guia, & Tammy David). All were completed during workshops led by Bialobrzeski in October 2007-March 2008. The diverse themes and approaches in the 105 pieces, in addition to Peter Bialobrzeski’s work, are like fragments of the unseen and unnoticed ordinariness hidden in these 6 cities. When these fragments are joined in one single frame, like a map, they begin to show what was formerly invisible.

In mapping them, these photographers have made their cities more obvious and bring to the surface what we do not (want to see) or notice. Their works act as maps that show the organization of space, movement, and people. Some also show how maps can be tied to the imagination and abstractions. Altogether they serve as valuable insights to and experiences of Southeast Asia’s largest cities. They also give audiences the ability to see into the future of Southeast Asian photography.
